iTunes for everyone???

Well, this is an interesting turn. <a href=http://www.apple.com/itunes/” class=”external” target=”_blank”>iTunes is now avaialbe for windows… and it looks good to. Oh an by that I don’t just mean that it literally looks goods, but that it appears to be a good, solid peice of software. And I’m thinking the best music playing jukebox software for the PC, ever!

  1. Overall I quite like it, and once i’ve got over the initial headaches I’m still using it as my default audio player on Windows. However the shiny new Windows iTunes has quite a few gotchas - particularly with the sharing/streaming and built-in cd burning. Many of these could be issues on the Mac, but Apple has the advantage of control over the hardware/OS and there are so many more potential configurations of Windows. I’m amazed that it’s feature for feature with the Mac version. My two biggest gripes are: it seems like iTunes is programmed according to the mac styled event model, thus it’s quite possible for it to get hung up on some task and sit at 100% cpu occupancy thus hanging the entire OS. This should be something that good software design attempts to reduce/eliminate. Secondly, there isn’t enough notification for advanced users in the install pertaining to the changes that are made, in particular - it installs two services that are running from the time you start your machine. In comparision to some of the other free Winblowz apps - say real player, the default install behaviour of iTunes is not any more obnoxious, both add stuff to the system tray, try and take over file associations and add programs that run at startup. I was just expecting a more minimalist approach by Apple. What is wrong with not starting the CD-Burning libraries until they are required?
